Accepting Input-Desirable Skills in 2010

I am in a wonderful position to know when my current job is likely to end. I have an opportunity to work on my skills while building work experience! I've already signed up for as much python scripting as possible, since I enjoy it and it helps my project, but there is also a chance for me to apply web testing technologies as I'm testing a flex dashboard as part of my job.

What are some of the key skills that medium sized software companies will be looking for in 2010? When your team is looking for an experienced tester or test lead, what tools are you looking for experience with?

In terms of the soft skills and test process and methodology, I continue to read books, blogs, go to conferences, and stay in proximity to the thought leaders I respect most, but my question is, on the technical side, what are the most valued additions I could add?

If you'd like to check out my linkedin and give me advice, I'm all ears!

Selenium is a good place to start. Their IDE is easy to learn how to use. Once you have that figured out, you can use selenium RC. I've used it with TestNG.

We have a new Fitnesse server here to play with as well. I think that might be useful as well? Not sure what to use it for though.

I'm glad to be on an agile team getting some experience with scrum also.

Here are some of the items that I have in mind on my list. Some of them I already addressed, but I don't know for sure about your situation:

    Testing:
    - RobotFramework
    - ATDD

    Programming:
    - Ruby
    - any xUnit derivative
    - TDD
    - Refactoring

    Methodology:
    - Craftsmanship (both Software and Testing)

    Management:
    - Quality Software Management Series

Hope this gives you some inspirations.

This really helps! Are the testers making the unit tests where you work? Is that what you are looking for? Our unit tests are in Java.

Fitness and RobotFramework are similar? would experience with one carry over to the other?
